ISSUE 6Cultivating CuriosityLourens ErasmusWe opened our doors on the 1st of August 2016 to meet the scientific and laboratory testing needs of the agricultural and food industries. SciCorp Laboratories evolved from a management buyout of the state-of-the art Analytical Services Laboratory of Incotec South Africa.
This move by management enabled the team to use their vast fields of expertise to grow service delivery beyond existing seed testing services. To this end, investment in top personnel and equipment is a priority.

SciCorp Laboratories offer its service from Pietermaritzburg, Pretoria and the Cape and is led by a highly experienced team. SciCorp will continue to build a dynamic, world-class accredited laboratory that will see new departments and services launched beyond their current scope, according to customer and market needs.
SciCorp provides professional, independent laboratory services by offering testing, R&D and consulting services to a broad range of clients, markets and industries.
The opening of our microbiology laboratory occurred in perfect timing to support clients with the recent Listeria outbreak in South Africa. SciCorp Laboratories will offer rapid microbiology tests where clients will receive their results within 24 hours after arrival of samples in Pietermaritzburg.

Testing started with Listeria, and the list will soon expand to include all major foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella (S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium), and shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).
We launched our new capability with a bang!
SciCorp entertained members of our community and the food industry at our head office in Pietermaritzburg. Upon arrival, visitors got to meet each other and network over a cup of tea, after which our first speaker and managing director, Dr Tertia Erasmus, introduced the team and took visitors through a presentation on who we are and what we do.

Next, local expert in quality control, Ann Gregory, informed visitors of the importance of proper microbial testing in the food industry, based on (sometimes scary!) real-life situations she came across in her career.

Recently, the South African Bee Industry Organisation (SABIO) asked the South African government to start policing honey adulteration that has clearly been going on for a while, without consumers noticing. A recent investigation showcased on the television program Carte Blanche, raised awareness of honey adulteration in the country.
