QUALITY
COUNTS
Bruce Cowie and Jani LotteringWhen purchasing any natural medicines, it’s incredibly important to choose a trustworthy supplier that provides quality products and respects their customers health and wellbeing.
Since Kratom, scientifically known as Mitragyna speciosa, has only recently started to gain popularity in South Africa, not a lot is known about the plant in general. This amazing plant is a science all on its own, so it’s important that the vendors and distributors know their stuff.

Kratom can be more easily understood if compared to a plant like Cannabis. There are a large variety of strains which have different effects and can be used to heal different ailments. Medicinal quality Cannabis is a lot more expensive than your average outdoor grown plant, as it is a lot more powerful. Kratom is no different in that way. There are also a large variety of strains which the supplier should know intimately in order to assess the patients’ symptoms and suggest their perfectly tailored strain. Quality is another very important factor when selecting a supplier.

Commercial grade Kratom is unfortunately distributed on a large scale. Since South Africans are so new to the plant, some suppliers themselves don’t even know the difference, and would more than likely import the most cost-effective stock.

The best way to make an informed decision when selecting a brand is to check out their customer testimonials and reviews. Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) should never be blended down with other herbs and fillers as this would lessen the effects, thus bigger doses are required to get the full effect.
Premium quality Kratom is not easy to come by, as it requires more time to produce.
The stem and vein of the leaf are carefully removed before drying and processing. Premium quality might cost more, but ultimately an effective dose is far less, and thus more cost effective in the long run.

The problem with commercial grade Kratom is that the end user will need high doses, as the stem and vein of the plant are ground in with the flesh of the leaf. The stem and vein in high doses can lead to unwanted side effects. Others blend it down even further with other herbs so the effect is reduced, thus giving the plant itself a bad reputation. Quality, service, guidance and support are also vitally important whilst South Africans familiarise themselves with this miraculous plant medicine.
